• The steppe lands of Mongolia had no large rivers and only grass and shrubs grew, which were not edible by humans but edible to animals.

  • Taking advantage of a Asia's vast open spaces, they traveled all over Asia in a migratory cycle that was influenced by the seasons and the climate conditions.

  • The Mongols lived off their animals; i.e. food, milk, bones for tools, wool for clothes and shoes.

  • Did little agriculture

  • When a water source was found, agriculture was used in place of using animals (they ate the crops instead of eating their cattle).

  • Very little manufacturing. Most manufactured items were pottery, leather goods, iron weapons, and few tools.

  • As a migratory people, they had few skilled artisans and educated individuals. As their empire grew, they required more of these skilled people and would recruit them from their allies/conquered peoples.

  • All advaned weaponry and technology was taken from conquered/allied peoples and improved for their uses and needs.

  • Because of their promotion of trade and extensive involvement of trade throughout Eurasia, they helped spread the bubonic plague; which killed half or more of their population. (1330 c.e)

  • Because the Mongols could not hold the Chinese peasant rebellions, they left China in shambles from the plague and returned to the steppe lands of Mongolia. (1368 c.e)
